Abstract

Chronic kidney failure (CKF) patients experience a condition where the kidneys cannot remove metabolic products that accumulate in the blood, causing changes in fluid and electrolyte balance. CKF patients undergoing hemodialysis often feel thirsty due to the mandatory fluid restriction program. Ice cups, low-sugar chewing gum and gargling warm water are some of the thirst management methods in CKF patients. This study aims to analyze the comparison of ice cup therapy, low-sugar chewing gum and gargling warm water on reducing thirst in CKF patients. The study used a descriptive study design, the NRS questionnaire measured the thirst scale. The intervention was carried out in 3 groups of CKF patients undergoing hemodialysis for 3 days. The results of the Ice cup treatment were a thirst scale of 80 to 50, a low-sugar chewing gum was a thirst scale of 85 to 40 and a boiled water gargle was a thirst scale of 70 to 60. Therapy can be applied both at home and in the hospital.
